1. A local area that is familiar to you is a good starting point for your mediascape.
2. Local features and landmarks are useful places to locate sounds and images.
3. You will need to decide what your mediascape is going to show, tell or do, and start thinking about what sounds and images will fit in with the local landscape.
4. Plan your mediascape on a map of the area; you will need a digital map to build your mediascape.
5. By adding digital content, you can create a "digital layer" over the landscape, and when you reach certain points along the route, you will experience this content.
6. To "trigger" the content (make it play in the right places), a GPS (Global Positioning System) device can pinpoint your position.
7. In the mediascape software, the area where the content is located is called a Region.
8. Once you have finished making your mediascape, you can then go outside to make sure the images and sounds are triggered in the right place.
9. Use a handheld computer (PDA) to view the map and pictures when you are outside.
10. You can hear the sounds through a pair of headphones.
11. When you move in or out of a Region, the GPS unit recognises your movement, and sends a signal to the PDA software. This "Event" triggers the PDA to do something, such as play a sound or display and image.
Use your imagination and include your own ideas when you build your own mediascape. Every one is different, what will your be like?
